Overview
About an hour from Luang Prabang, the Kuang Si Falls tumble in turquoise tiers through the jungle β three main levels leading to a 50-metre drop, with a run of smaller cascades and shallow pools below that make some of the best natural swimming holes in Laos. Wooden changing huts sit near the entrance, so you can swim the pools or just relax in the shade and watch.
On the way in you stop at the bear sanctuary at the base of the falls, home to rescued Asiatic black bears (moon bears) saved from wildlife trafficking, then walk the forest trails β some leading right to the top of the falls where the stream feeds in. Wear proper footwear, as the trails can be slippery, especially in the wet season. It's an easy, refreshing half-day escape into nature from the town.
