Overview

Vang Vieng sits on the Nam Song river, ringed by dramatic karst mountains riddled with caves — and beneath the backpacker reputation it's one of the best spots in Laos for an active day on and under the water. This trip pairs kayaking the Nam Song past the limestone cliffs with a headlamp exploration of a river cave, for the outdoors side of Vang Vieng rather than the party side.

You paddle a stretch of the Nam Song — gentle, scenic water with the karsts rising on either side — then explore a cave such as Tham Nam (the Water Cave), where you pull yourself along a rope through a river passage by headlamp. It's an easy-to-moderate day out, guided throughout, with the paddling and the caving balanced so there's plenty of time to take in the scenery. Lunch is included.
