Only My Tho is feasible as 1-day from HCMC and it's the most touristy + least authentic. Real Mekong experience needs 2-3 days: Cai Rang floating market (Can Tho) + Vinh Long homestay. Otherwise skip and add another HCMC day.
When is the best time to see Cai Rang market?
4-6am is peak boat activity · vendors begin trading at first light · by 8am most have dispersed. Plan to leave Can Tho hotel by 4:30am · book sampan boat night-before. By 9am the market is essentially empty.
My Tho vs Ben Tre: which to pick?
My Tho = closer (90min) · busier · more touristy. Ben Tre = further (2.5hr) · quieter · more authentic coconut workshops + smaller boat through arroyos. For first-time visitors: Ben Tre. For tight schedule: My Tho. We've operated both for 15 years.
