"Halong is my home water. I've sailed every operator from 1N $145 to 4N $1,200 · I know which captains take the quiet Lan Ha route at sunrise vs which crowd the main lagoon. WhatsApp me — I'll match cabin tier to your budget AND tell you which vessel skips the worst tourist traps."
Standard Cruises Cruises FAQ
1N vs 2N vs 3N — which is best?
2N is the sweet spot — 1 full day for kayak + cave + swim, plus relaxed dinner+sunrise. 1N feels rushed (board lunch · 1 cave · sunset · sleep · brunch · off). 3N adds Lan Ha southern bay (quieter · same UNESCO geology) — best for photographers and 5★ travellers.
Halong vs Lan Ha — what is the difference?
Same UNESCO area · same karst geology. Halong = iconic + busier (300+ vessels) · Lan Ha = southern alt with same views and ~40 vessels. Lan Ha cheaper to operate so cabins are 10-15% less for same tier. If you hate crowds book Lan Ha; if you want the postcard view book Halong.
What about typhoon season?
August-September peak typhoon. Vietnam Maritime Bureau closes the bay on red-flag warnings. We monitor 7-day weather and notify 48-72h ahead — 100% refund or free rebook to alternative dates. Weve postponed ~6 cruises across 2023-2025; zero cash losses for clients.
How do I get from Hanoi to the wharf?
Halong 150km · 3h drive · Tuần Châu wharf. Lan Ha via Got Ferry Cat Ba 3.5h drive + ferry. Bai Tu Long 4h drive · Hon Gai Port. Most cruises include round-trip group shuttle from Old Quarter hotels.
Is seasickness a problem?
Rarely — Standard Cruises is a sheltered area with minimal swell. Junior Suites mid-ship lowest motion. Bring patches if prone.
What should I pack?
Swim suit · light jacket (cool sundeck mornings) · slip-on shoes for cave platforms · sunscreen · motion-sickness patches optional · power bank. Towels + toiletries provided.
Are kids welcome?
Yes on family-cabin vessels (Stellar of the Seas · Bhaya Premium · Paradise Sails). Era Cruises is adults-only. Children under 6 free on most operators; 6-11 half-price; 12+ full-price.
Can I book cabin upgrade at boarding?
Subject to availability. Direct-contract relationship means we ask the GM for upgrades pre-arrival — about 30% of our guests get a free upgrade where vessel under-occupied. OTA bookings (Booking/Agoda) never qualify.
