I designed this trip differently from the Robert-as-founder Hà Nội itineraries my colleagues build because I was the traveler, not just the designer — and the travelers were my mother (62 · retired teacher · phở-curious but never tried it) and my father (65 · former engineer · doesn't drink coffee but will eat anything once). Five days because that's what their PTO budget allowed. Hà Nội only because Halong Bay over-the-top stresses parents who've never done overnight cruises.
Here is what 14 years of designing Hà Nội trips for clients didn't prepare me for: how exhausting Hà Nội is for first-time visitors over 60 if you don't build in afternoon recovery time. By 2pm on Day 2 my mom was sitting on a bench in the Old Quarter saying "I just need 20 minutes." That's when I knew the 1-3pm hotel siesta block had to be non-negotiable for the rest of the week. We never skipped it. Day 3 onwards she was pacing fine.
Why Old Quarter only · why not Halong
I get asked this every time clients see this story. The reason is structural: parents who've never been to Việt Nam need one neighborhood to learn before they can handle the country. Old Quarter is 36 streets squeezed into 100 hectares · everything walkable · five Robert-tested phở places within 800m of any hotel · sit-down restaurants for tired evenings · pottery village 30 minutes by Grab for a "we made something" day · museums for rainy days · Train Street for the photo. Adding Halong means a 4.5-hour transfer · overnight on a boat (cabin claustrophobia · parents over 60 don't sleep well in unfamiliar beds) · 4.5 hours back. That eats 2 days of a 5-day trip. Next time we'll add Halong but it'll be a 7-day trip.

What I'd cut from the original plan
I originally had a half-day cooking class on Day 4 (spring rolls + phở stock + cao lầu) but parents told me on Day 3 evening they wanted Day 4 slower · no instructor · just wandering. We cut it. Best call of the trip. Day 4 became Hỏa Lò + lunch + siesta + matinée + café — and Dad still talks about Café Giảng's egg coffee a month later.
I originally had Bún chả Hương Liên (the Obama-Bourdain place) on Day 2 lunch. Walked past at 12:45pm Thursday · queue 40 minutes deep. We pivoted to Bún chả Đắc Kim two streets over · empty · same dish style · 70% as good for 0% of the wait. Mom's blunt verdict: "I don't need to eat where Obama ate. I need to eat lunch."
